SUMMARY:“WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS” Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:On September 25th\, a far-right group\, Lex Libertas\, installed three thousand white crosses on the National Mall to promote the false narrative of a “white genocide” underway in South Africa and justify the creation of an independent white ethnic state–a narrative that many white South Africans\, including faithful white South African Christians\, are actively challenging. \nOn September 20th\, we welcomed South African minister Reverend Rudi Swanepoel to share his efforts to challenge these dangerous false narratives and to open a gallery exhibit in our entryway featuring art by Afrikaners\, the ethnic group that held power during the South African apartheid era. The group of Afrikaner artists whose provocative works are being exhibited at New York Avenue is honestly reckoning with their identities alongside that history and speaking out courageously against white supremacy from within their own communities. \nThe exhibit is on display through October 1 and is free and open to the public Monday through Friday\, 10 am to 3 pm\, and Sunday\, 1 to 2:30 pm.

SUMMARY:“Christian Nationalism: A Danger to the Church and Democracy” A Webinar with Rev. Jimmie Hawkins
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 7 at 7 pm for a webinar featuring Rev. Jimmie Hawkins\, Director of Advocacy and Witness for the Presbyterian Church USA. Christians have always struggled to find the right relationship between the commitment they have made to their faith and the commitment they feel to their country. A significant number of Christians in the United States embrace ideas that blur the distinction between these two different loyalties and some even believe we should merge the two identities and describe ourselves as a Christian nation. Rev. Jimmie Hawkins will share insights from his new book on the origins of Christian Nationalism and discuss a wide variety of issues about what the proper role of Christianity should be in public and political life. \nRegistration is free at nyapc.org/hawkins
