SUMMARY:Matthew 25 Regional Summit
DESCRIPTION:Has Anyone Heard of the Matthew 25 Movement? \nThe Matthew 25 movement is a PCUSA initiative that encourages congregations to work toward three goals: building congregational vitality\, dismantling structural racism\, and eradicating systemic poverty. Currently\, 1\,230 congregations\, 97 mid-councils (presbyteries and synods)\, and 70 other groups have committed to helping the denomination become a more relevant presence worldwide. There are three secondary foci: climate change\, militarism\, gender justice\, and heteropatriarchy. All kinds of activities fall under these umbrellas – working for affordable housing\, tutoring and mentoring\, helping people with addiction or mental health issues\, and working for policy changes. \nOur presbytery has a Dismantling Racism Team working with the Presbytery of Baltimore’s DRT to sponsor a Matthew 25 Regional Summit at the First Presbyterian Church of Howard County (Columbia\, MD) on Saturday\, October 26. There will be two plenaries\, nine workshops\, opening and closing worship\, and lunch. The speaker at the first plenary will be Rev. Jermaine Ross-Allam\, the Director of the Office of Repair of Historic Harms (PCUSA). Jermaine is a wonderfully gifted speaker who notes that if we say we will never dismantle structural racism in our lifetime\, we will never really start. We can progress on reparations by focusing on specific communities and harms. The work that Georgetown University is doing to provide justice to the descendants of the slaves it sold to keep itself going is a case in point. The speaker at the second plenary will be Amanda Tyler\, Executive Director of the Baptist Joint Committee\, speaking on ending Christian Nationalism. \nThe cost for participants is $35 and scholarships are available. There are links on the flyer to the registration form and to the schedule for the day. Adlai Amor and Miriam Dewhurst are members of the NCP Dismantling Racism Team and also members of the M25 Summit planning team and would welcome any questions that you have. Please come if you can. \nRegistration due October 15th. Sign up here.

SUMMARY:“Are Politics and History the New Theology: Topic 1” Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Today people debate history and not theology. Few know what double predestination is\, much less who John Calvin was\, but they debate the legacy of Robert E. Lee\, MLK or the BLM movement. In the first of 3 sessions\, Len Shabman will ask us to consider what NYAPC’s own history says about our theological foundations and what it means to be a Christian in 2024 America. Join us in the Docherty Center on the first floor. All are welcome. No registration is required.

SUMMARY:Peace & Global Witness Offering
DESCRIPTION:The Peace & Global Witness Offering is an important annual event in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)\, designed to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of conflict and injustice across the world. This offering is collected during the Season of Peace\, which runs from September 1st through October 6th\, culminating on World Communion Sunday. \nContributions to this offering are divided to support peacemaking efforts at various levels: 25% of the offering stays with local congregations to support peace initiatives in their communities\, another 25% is used by mid councils for regional peace and reconciliation efforts\, and the remaining 50% is directed to the Presbyterian Mission Agency for global peace and justice programs. \nAt NYAPC\, we encourage our congregation to participate in this offering as it allows us to actively engage in ministries of reconciliation\, both locally and globally\, and to bear witness to the peace of Christ in a world where peace is often at risk. \nFor more information on how your contribution makes a difference\, visit PC(USA) Peace & Global Witness Offering (Presbyterian Special Offerings) (Presbytery of Greater Atlanta) (PCUSA).

SUMMARY:WIN Public Safety Mini-Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join our partner WIN’s event on Public Safety! \nThe Washington Interfaith Network Public Safety Team invites member congregations and allies to join us Sunday afternoon\, September 22nd\, to discuss the state of public safety in D.C.\, to reflect on the theological vision we bring to the work\, and to prepare to organize and advocate effectively for approaches that are equitable and sustainable. We will be building relationships across institutions\, including faith-based and secular\, and learning about approaches that can genuinely help our communities. The afternoon will be educational\, interactive\, and inspiring. \nAll are welcome! We particularly encourage congregations that have been involved in public safety/gun violence\, or who want to be\, to send a team of 3 or more. It’s always easier to mobilize if you have a team! The Mini-Conference will be Sunday September 22 at Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ\, 3845 S Capitol St SW\, from approximately 2-6 PM. More information on the program and registration coming soon. If you’re interested in learning more\, please reach out to Olivia Buckley\, WIN’s Public Safety Organizer\, at olivia.windc@gmail.com.
