Visiting New York Avenue Presbyterian Church?

We appreciate your interest in the New York Avenue faith community! Please let us know how we can help you by taking a few moments to share a bit of information about yourself on our visitor form, and we will be in touch.

What to Expect

Join us Sundays for Worship at 10 am

** Worship and Sunday School classes for children and adults continue online due to installation of a new air conditioning system.**

9 am – Sunday School and Adult Programs

Programming for all ages take place during the 9:00 am hour, September–May. Other spiritual growth offerings occur throughout the week, both online and in–person, including First Sunday FaithTalk, online adult classes and discussions, Tuesday and Thursday Prayer Groups, and more. See our Children and Youth page and Events page for more information.

10:00 – Worship

All ages are welcome! The Sacrament of Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month and all are invited to partake. (need to add nursery and worship play when we are in person)

11 am – Fellowship

Immediately following the 10 am service, join us for a time for fellowship in the back of the Sanctuary. This hour is also sometimes used for conversations about various topics of interest to the congregation (and occasional congregational meetings).

Frequently asked questions

How long is a typical worship service?

Our worship service lasts about one hour

Where do I or my kids go on Sunday morning?

10 am worship is in the Sanctuary on the second floor. Children and youth begin the 9 am Sunday School hour with gathering time on the 5th floor. Adult classes are frequently offered on the first floor. See the events page for details for adult programming.

How do I get there?

We are located in the triangle formed by New York Avenue, H Sreett and 13th Street, NW, two blocks east of the White House, close to McPherson Square and Metro Center stations. Street parking is free on Sunday mornings; in addition, free parking is available on Sundays in the garage immediately to the east of the church building on New York Avenue.

Which door do I use?

There are two ways to get to the Sanctuary. If you come up the outside stairs, you will enter in the back of the Sanctuary. You are also welcome to come through the entrance on the New York Avenue side and take the elevator to the second floor, where you then enter at the front of the Sanctuary, on either side of the pulpit.

Is there a nursery?

Yes! We offer nursery care for infants to age 2 in during the 9 am Sunday School Hour and the 10 am worship service. Our nursery is staffed by paid and background–checked nursery workers.

What about kids in worship?

Children are part of our congregation and are always welcome. There is an activity table for our youngest members and visitors toward the back of the Sanctuary, if that is helpful for your little ones. Children typically leave the service during the sermon for worship play, then return for the end of the service.

What about my teenagers?

All children and youth begin the 9:00 am Sunday School hour with Gathering Time on the 5th floor, and then go to their classes. Read more

Are LGBTQ+ persons welcome?

Yes! New York Avenue is a part of the More Light network of congregations, “working toward the full participation of LGBTQIA+ people in the life, ministry and witness of the Presbyterian Church (USA) – and in society,” and part of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians. For those seeking a gender–neutral restroom, there is one on the 2nd floor, just outside the Sanctuary doors on the New York Avenue side of the building.

What should I wear?

Up to you! Our members and visitors dress in a variety of ways, from “Sunday Best” to blue jeans and T-shirts.

How can I get more involved?

Watch our upcoming events for gatherings that would be of interest to you and/or volunteer with one of our Justice Ministries. Find out about joining our congregation here.
